Betty Ruth (Lawrence) Turner was born May 31, 1929, in Roosevelt, Oklahoma, to Rufus Buford and Bettie Minnie Mae (Metheney) Lawrence. She passed into the arms of her Savior on Monday, September 22, 2025, at the age of 96.
Betty grew up farming with her family in the Cache area, where her father praised her for planting the straightest rows in the county. She married Clinton Durwood "C.D." Turner on August 13, 1948, in Lawton. C.D. passed away October 1, 2014.
A skilled seamstress, Betty sewed for other families while she and Durwood raised their children. She later worked in the media center for Lawton Public Schools, where she spent 25 years as an administrative assistant, retiring in 1992.
Betty was a lifelong member of Beal Heights Presbyterian Church. She and Durwood participated in numerous church activities and rarely missed Family Night Suppers, which were filled with fellowship and singing.
Of all Betty's roles, being a mom was her favorite. She and Durwood had four children: James, Anna, Alisa, and Amy Jo.
Betty was affectionately known as Nana by her family and some friends, especially by her grandchildren. While never afraid to speak her mind, Nana loved her family with a deep and abiding love.
Betty enjoyed serving others. She and Durwood opened their home several times to immigrants and Fort Sill soldiers who needed a short-term place to live. Their Thanksgiving table often included single soldiers and guests who would otherwise be alone for the holiday. Betty was an incredible, self-taught cake decorator, treasurer of the Lawton Heritage Association, and docent at the Mattie Beal home. She loved card games and dominoes. Betty would gladly fish with anyone who would join her on the banks of a river or lake. Not only was Betty masterful at sewing and mending clothes, but as a patient and attentive listener, she was beautiful at mending broken hearts.
Betty was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Amy Jo, Durwood, her husband of 67 years, and her granddaughter, Jessica Hall Major. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Rufus and Bettie Minnie Mae Lawrence, brother Vencil and sister-in-law Loretta Lawrence, sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Ralph Hockersmith, brother and sister-in-law, Alfred and Irene Lawrence, sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Jiles Hall, infant sister, Anna Lou Lawrence, brother-in-law, Raymond Banks, and sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Louis Wayne Caha.
