Obituary

Age 99 years, 11 months and 2 days - Memorial Service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2009 at the Memorial Chapel, First Baptist Church, with Rev. Kenneth Cantrell officiating. Mrs. Jack died November 15, 2009 at Willow Park Health Care Center in Lawton. Interment will be in the Resthaven Park Cemetery in Glendale, Arizona, with her husband Harold. Bertha was born December 13, 1909 on a farm near Giltner, Nebraska, daughter of Orrin M. Starr and Effie Belle Miller. She grew up in Giltner on a farm until she was 14 and her mother died. They then moved into town and her father went to work for the railroad. She attended college and began as a school teacher in 1929 until she married. She married Harold I. Jack on July 18, 1931 in Riverton, Wyoming. They married in a double wedding ceremony with his sister and her husband. They lived in Riverton until Harold entered seminary in the fall of 1931 at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They drove their Model A back and forth to seminary all three years until graduation. His first church was in Arnold, Nebraska. Harold died on November 23, 1991 in Phoenix, Arizona. Bertha continued to live there until she learned that her daughter Jackie and son-in-law Irven Johnson, were going to retire in Lawton, Oklahoma. She then decided to move closer to them and resided at Ten Oaks Retirement Center from the year 2003 until this past Spring 2009 whereupon she moved to Willow Park. Bertha enjoyed being a pastor's wife and in serving in ministry all of her adult life. She loved to be out in nature, gardening, raising flowers and doing yard work, spending time in the outdoors. Bertha and Harold were life-long partners and they could always be found side by side working together in ministry for over 60 years. Their ministry together was spread throughout Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona. They worked together at many levels of local, state and national ministry for American Baptist Churches of the USA. They supported their children and grandchildren in many endeavors and taught a strong faith and work ethic to their family. Bertha was always found doing something to support all areas of ministry from women's work, playing the piano and organ for church, teaching in the Sunday school area and being an active pastor's wife. She had a very strong faith in God and it was important for her to instill this faith in her family and church friends. It didn't make any difference where she lived, she always touched people in a special way and ministered to their hearts. Even the nursing staff of Willow Park were especially touched by her gentleness and caring love. Less than a month away from celebrating her 100th birthday. She now is again at work in ministry with her loved ones who have preceded her and with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Jackie and Irven Johnson, Lawton; a son, Richard M. Jack, Troy, New Hampshire; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Laura and Scott Stone, Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire, Kimberly and Andrew Harris and Rebecca and Alan Klotzbier, all of Marlborough, New Hampshire, Grant and Toni Johnson, Columbia, South Carolina, Mark Johnson, San Antonio, Texas, Sonja Johnson, Lawton, and Anthony and Tanya Johnson, Northridge, California; five great grandchildren, Mason and Anna Harris and Olivia and Alison Klotzbier, all of Marlborough, New Hampshire, and Alanna Johnson-Perkins, San Antonio, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, one sister and one brother. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1409, Lawton OK 73502.
