Obituary

Age 89, Lawton - Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Al Potts, Pastor, officiating. Mrs. Baker died Monday in Lawton. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home. She was born December 9, 1918 at Center, Oklahoma to Chester and Vertia Lovelace Medlock. She entered her first year of school at Center in 1924. One of her classmates was Oral Roberts, the world renowned evangelist minister. At a young age, the Medlock family moved to Stratford, Oklahoma, where Mrs. Baker grew up and graduated from high school in 1937. That fall, she entered East Central State Teacher's College in Ada, Oklahoma, (Now East Central University), where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in January 1941. She and Charles W. Baker, Jr. were married in Salinas, California, on June 16, 1941. He preceded her in death on September 1, 1985. Mr. Baker was a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army. During the early years of their marriage, they were stationed in nine different states with tours of duty in Sendai, Japan and Munich, Germany. Each place they were stationed Mrs. Baker taught children's Sunday school classes and sang in the church choir. While they were stationed in Japan, Mrs. Baker did volunteer work at her home with teenage Japanese boys and girls. She and the teenagers became great friends; they talked over their differences and problems and learned from their divergences. She still keeps in contact with many of these friends and several have visited in her home in Lawton and attended the United Methodist Church with her. When she retired from teaching in 1981 she went back to Japan and stayed in their homes. Some of them call her their Oklahoma sister. When the Baker's were stationed in Germany, she taught a year and a half at the Munich American Elementary School. Following their tour of duty in Germany, the Baker's returned to Fort Sill in 1955 where she taught school at Andrew Jackson Elementary School until her retirement on May 29, 1981. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Tomlinson Sunday School class, Retired Teachers Association, the National and Oklahoma Education Association and she was a former member of the Military Widows Association. She is survived by her daughter, Linda A. Stewart, Lawton; a granddaughter, Kari Stewart Aloupis, Orlando, Florida; a brother and sister in law, Bill and Mary Anne Medlock, Stratford, Oklahoma; two great grandsons, William J. Aloupis, Jr. and Zachary R. Aloupis, both of Orlando, Florida; one aunt, Geraldine Medlock Melton, Shawnee, Oklahoma; a nephew and his wife, Earl and Evelyn Baldwin, Memphis, Tennessee; two nieces and husbands, Ada and Rufus Cowsert, Germantown, Tennessee, and Delores and Bill Perkins, Henderson, Tennessee; several cousins and many friends.
