Anna Faye Hughes Woodson, age 93, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2016 in Lawton. She was born March 19, 1922 at County Line, Arkansas to Robert E. and Grace Johnson Hughes.
Anna grew up at County Line, near Glenwood Arkansas, graduating as valedictorian from Glenwood High School in 1940. She attended Ouachita Baptist College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas during the early years of World War II. She then began teaching elementary school in Amity, Arkansas, where she met a young sailor home on leave after serving in the South Pacific during the war. She married Lester Woodson on July 24, 1945, and they established a home initially in Pensacola, Florida. Anna worked for the next few years to support her husband as he continued his education in Arkansas and Tennessee following the war.
Children followed, with Darrell Wayne Woodson, Ronald Glen Woodson, and Gary David Woodson.. After Lester served as a public school teacher, coach, and administrator in Arkansas for many years, they moved to Lawton, Oklahoma in 1956 for Lester to begin work in Civil Service at Fort Sill. They established a home and joined Lawton Heights Methodist Church, where she remained a member for 60 years. She remained a homemaker and mom as her sons grew and completed their education. She was a superb Mom, an excellent cook and seamstress, and an invaluable worker for her church. She cooked for Northwest Kiwanis meetings and served as the organist for over 30 years at the church, and was always involved in church activities and organizations.
During the years that her sons were in school, she and Lester operated a very successful Amway business which helped put the boys through school. After multiple graduations and Lester retired, she and Lester traveled the world and the United States and enjoyed the arrival of many grandchildren. She became an accomplished artist and exhibited her paintings in multiple venues around Lawton. She was also an excellent cook. Her cakes, pies, and homemade rolls were a special part of every family gathering.
Lester died in 2003 after 56 years of marriage, and Anna entered a new phase in life. She continued to be active in church and developed new friends and activities. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and then great-grandchildren, to whom she was known as "Grandma the Great".
She will be missed by her family who loved her greatly. Her easy smile and sparkling eyes will always be cherished memories. Her family is reminded of Proverbs 31:10, 25-29: "Who can find a virtuous woman?...She is a woman of strength and dignity, and has no fear of old age. When she speaks her words are wise, and kindness is the rule for everything she says. She watches carefully all that goes on throughout her household and is never lazy. Her children stand and bless her: so does her husband. He praises her with these words: There are many fine women in the world, but you are the best of them all!"
Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Woodson, brothers Orville, Floyd, Robert, and Don Hughes, sisters Mildred Harrill and Virginia Anderson.
She is survived by her sons Darrell and wife Regina Woodson, Ron and wife Christie Woodson, and Gary and wife Christina Woodson. Her grandchildren Rusty Woodson, Casey and wife Tamara Woodson, Raegan and husband Jay Williams, Jessica and husband Drew Champagne, John and wife Whitney Woodson, Dr. Ronni and husband Marty Farris, Dr. Jeremy and wife Dr. Elena Woodson, and Tiffany and husband Weston Fite. Great-grandchildren Tanner Woodson, Caleb Woodson, Max Champagne, Simon Champagne, and Vera Williams as well as a soon to be born great grandson, Case Wesley Woodson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lawton Heights United Methodist Church, 1514 NW Andrews, Lawton OK 73507.
