Anita Louise Burkey, a beloved soul, peacefully departed this world with the love of her life holding her hand on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at the age of 79.

Anita's educational journey led her from Chickasha High School to Oklahoma College for Women (OCW), Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts (OCLA), and finally the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO), where she earned her teaching degree. Her passion for education blossomed into a 30-year career as a dedicated 2nd-grade teacher at Cyril Elementary.

Beyond the classroom, Anita's heart thrived on the farm, surrounded by the love of her family. Kind, loving, and with a mission to leave the world a better place, Anita touched the lives of many with her warmth and generosity.

Anita was a devout disciple of the Lord, living her life in accordance with His word. Her faith was a guiding light that illuminated her path and inspired those around her.

Anita is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Jerry Burkey; siblings Frances Ice and Allen McElreath; children Tammy and Mark Powers of Carnegie, Bonnie Keeley of Pryor, and James and Deanna Burkey of Elgin; grandchildren Christy Hampton and Eddie Hogan, Stacy and Micah Bentley, Brandon Gibson, Kellie and Jeremy Frost, Amber and Bren Wuergler, Jessica and Jared Wilson, and Michael Burkey; along with many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Anita was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Burkey, Jr., her parents Howard and Rosalia (Nelson) McElreath, and her brother Charles McElreath.

A memorial service for friends and family will be held in the future.
