Obituary

Age 93, Lawton - Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Dr. William F. Watkins and Rev. Tom Willoughby, officiating. Mrs. White-Wood died Tuesday in a Lawton care center. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Chickasha, under the direction of Becker Funeral Home. She was born September 29, 1914 in Chickasha to William Franklin and Agatha (Nelson) Cole. She married James C. White on August 11, 1935 in Chickasha. He preceded her in death on February 17, 1990. She grew up in the Norge / Pioneer community southwest of Chickasha and attended what was then Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha. At the age of 18 she started her teaching career in the one-room schoolhouse in Norge that acted as a feeder for Pioneer Schools. She was the janitor and principal along with being the teacher and even cooked soup and hot chocolate on the coal stove to share with her students, many of whom did not bring food to school. She later completed her bachelor degree at Central State University in Edmond and received her masters degree from the University of Oklahoma. Her teaching career spanned 43 years including time at Pioneer, Elm Flat, Rush Springs, eleven years at Friend School, east of Chickasha, where she taught, coached and assisted her husband Jim who was principal of the 12th grade program. She assisted in programs and musicals, playing the piano whenever requested, and never charging a fee. She played for school programs, funerals, weddings and church and continued that until she was about 80. In 1956 she and Jim left Grady County and moved to Lawton to become classroom teachers. She taught algebra at Central Junior High School and later Tomlinson until her retirement in 1977. Many of her students kept up with her over the years and she taught as many as three generations of the same family. She was active in many organizations including the Classroom Teacher's Association, National Education Association, and was recognized as Lawton's Teacher of the Year in 1975. She and Jim were active as department teachers and she as a pianist in the First Baptist Church in Lawton. She married Floyd Wood in October of 1995 and their marriage was featured on the local news since she was 81 and he 86 at the time of the wedding. Their happiness was spoiled only by fighting diseases such as breast cancer, stroke and leukemia. Floyd is a wonderful nurturer and she once said she considered herself the luckiest woman alive to have had two such wonderful husbands. She is survived by her husband, Floyd, of the home; a daughter and son in law, Carla and Lane Fabian, Allen, Texas; a son and daughter in law, Steven and Karen White, Greensboro, Georgia; her children by marriage, Gwen and Jerry Phelps, Lawton, and Helen and C.L. Craig, Shawnee, Oklahoma; a sister and brother in law, Betty Ruth and Larry Dowell, Antioch, California; four grandchildren and their spouses, Angela and Justin Mauck, George West, Texas, Christopher and Lisa White, Covington, Georgia, Mark and Wendy White, Richmond, Virginia, and Carrie White, Brooklyn, New York; two great grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1409, Lawton, OK 73502 or to the Lawton Public School Foundation, P.O. Box 2323, Lawton OK 73502.
