Adam Fisher was born on March 16, 1929 at the family farm north of Chattanooga, Oklahoma. He went to his heavenly home on September 17, 2023. Adam was the middle son of the three sons and five daughters born to Fred and Sarah Bierig Fisher. He truly loved being from a large family. Adam had many good memories and stories to tell about growing up with his siblings and working with them and his parents on their family farm. Adam attended first through 8th grade at a small, one-room country school known as Hiawatha which was located a little over a mile from his childhood home.
Adam met the love of his life, Atha Mae Bland, when he was 17 years old while they were picking bolls in a cotton patch. Adam and Atha Mae were married at Lawon, Oklahoma in July of 1949. They settled on their farm south of lndiahoma where they raised cattle, wheat, chickens, and according to Adam, "a few pigs and some sheep." Adam and Atha Mae had one son, Connie Douglas, who died shortly after birth in 1956. Adam and Atha Mae were married almost 63 years. They were a double uncle and aunt to Adam's brother, Fred, and Atha Mae's sister, Dovie and her four children: Chester, Clif, John Mark, and Peggy. Adam and Atha Mae always looked forward to Fred and Dovie's children coming to help them plant and harvest wheat, or to haul hay. After the farm work was done, they were always treated to one of Atha Mae's fabulous home-cooked meals. Adam and Atha Mae celebrated many holidays, birthdays, and family gatherings with Fred and Dovie's four children and later their spouses, then the six grandchildren and later their spouses, and then the great grandchildren which created a wealth of fond family memories for them all.
Adam felt he inherited the gift of working with his hands from his hard -working German parents and grandparents. In conjunction with farming and raising cattle, he worked many years doing carpentry work side by side with his older brother, Fred, and often with his nephews: Chester, Clif, and John Mark. Adam and Fred built and remodeled many buildings, houses, and barns throughout the Chattanooga, lndiahoma, Grandfield, and Cache area. The entire Fred and Sarah Fisher clan looked forward to seeing what handcrafted item Adam would make to bring to the annual Fisher Family Reunion and Auction. Many nieces and nephews through the years became the proud owners of Uncle Adam's
handmade wooden tables, wagons, jewelry boxes, stools, cars, trucks, and tractors.
From the time of his birth until the time of his death for over 94 years, Adam faithfully attended Peace Congregational Church located on the Baseline south of Indiahoma. At the age of "17 or 18", Adam said "by the grace of almighty God" he gave his heart to Jesus Christ. He loved "praising God with a joyful noise" by singing all of the old hymns he learned growing up at Peace Church. Clif would often find him after Atha Mae passed, sitting on his back porch singing from the church hymnal. He enjoyed teaching his great nieces and nephews a little German and one particular German song, "Gott Iste Libe" which means "God is Love." Adam became a lifetime member on the board of trustees at Peace
Church. He said he had the "honor" of helping to build a new church building for Peace Church in his later years.
Adam was given the Cooperator of the Year Award in 2015 for controlling mesquite trees and maintaining his farmland. This is no surprise since Adam was known by all who knew him well to be rather meticulous and particular about how he thought things should be done. His farm and even his house after Atha Mae's passing were kept neat as a pin. He was often found up until just a few months ago on his hands and knees cleaning his kitchen floor or pulling weeds in his yard. Adam said "I was blessed with a family of eight siblings and a great church family and enjoyed farming the land and raising livestock. I have seen many changes in my life from the horse and buggy to the modern tractor."
Adam was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Atha Mae, his son, Connie, and his seven siblings and their spouses: Fred and Dovie Fisher, George and Ruby Fisher, Martha and George Krasser, Rachel and George Butenschoen, Ruth and Rueben Zitterkob, Elsie and Don Lowery, and Mollie and Alex Biesel, two nephews: Fred Krasser and Chester Fisher, and one niece, Peggy Baddaracco. He is survived by a host of family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, Adam wishes memorial gifts be made to Peace Congregational Church or Chattanooga Cemetery.
