Age 76, Lawton - Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday in the Western Hills Christian Church with Pastor Nick Lovenburg and Rev. Dave Menge officiating. Sergeant Groves died Saturday in a Lawton hospital. Burial with full military honors will be in the Post Cemetery, Fort Sill, under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home. He was born December 22, 1933 in Belle Center, Ohio to Taylor and Bernice (Shafer) Groves. He graduated from high school in Belle Center in 1952 and had played all sports while in school. He worked for Bond Bread for three and a half years before entering the U.S. Army on March 13, 1957 at Fort Hayes, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army for over twenty years and was retired on May 31, 1977 at Fort Hood, Texas. He had been stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Fort Ord, California and Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and had served three tours of duty in Germany and two tours of duty in Korea. He received numerous awards while in the Army. Following his retirement from the Army he sold snack food for seventeen years with Lance, Inc. and retired in 1994 due to failing health. He married Margaretha M. Eihsiedler on June 16, 1959 at Grafenwoehr, Germany. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and cooking. He was a member of Western Hills Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, of the home; two daughters and sons in law, Marcella Sanchez and husband Felix, Killeen, Texas, and Cindy Lovenburg and husband Nick, Lawton; five grandchildren, Chris, Felicia, Virginia, Nicole and Natalie; six great grandchildren; a brother Larry Groves, Rushsylvania, Ohio; several nieces and nephews. His parents, grandparents, a sister, Evelyn, and a brother, Alfred, preceded him in death.
